Recently in our #accessibility Slack channel, Drew shared a great article on databases accommodating non-binary people. Meredith Broussard gives a great overview on some of the technical nuances of how personal information is stored in databases and the inherent bias that becomes embedded in the code.
As a non-binary person myself (who also happens to work as a developer), this article piqued my interest. Alex the non-binary person believes all “gender” fields should be text fields, with the user free to enter what they please. Alex the developer immediately thinks of all the challenges that solution presents.
However, the conversation about how to handle a “gender” field on forms is a small part of a much larger, more complicated picture. What does inclusivity of gender minorities truly look like? Let’s take a look at some of the bigger issues surrounding that frustrating little form field.
